Theatre of Scientific Discoveries
Research Explorers and Antwerpriza Theatre
invite teenagers to an experimental theatre laboratory
Dive into the history
of the Dutch Golden Age
and travel to Delft
A study of the works of Jan Vermeer and the scientific achievements of van Leeuwenhoek
Let's create a science-theater show where the mysteries of art and science are intertwined
The Theatre of Scientific Discoveries is a collaborative project that combines scientific research and theatrical art to uncover historical mysteries.
Together with the participants of the laboratory, we will take the audience back in time to explore the mysteries of history and science together.
Unique advantages of the approach
We explore and get knowledge through theatrical immersion and scientific experiments. The experience of scientific research and acting will help not only to easily master any knowledge but also to be able to convey it to others. We will combine science and art in an exciting form of theatrical performance.
  • Historical context

Dive into the Dutch Golden Age and explore the historical facts of that time. Like real actors, we will dive into the proposed circumstances of Delft and look at the lives of its inhabitants. Let's pay attention to the economic peculiarities, scientific achievements and flourishing of art of that time. Let's try to get in touch with history in its entirety, from costumes and hats to the pavements of Delft and fencing skills.
  • Scientific research
An analysis of the works of Jan Vermeer and an examination of the role of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in their creation. We explore the possibility of using a camera obscura in Vermeer's works. Let's check the version of historians David Hockney and Philip Steadman, who claimed that Vermeer used a system of optical lenses polished by van Leeuwenhoek for his paintings. It was not for nothing that the artist made his friend the manager of his legacy. Or is this all speculation and in reality everything was completely different?
  • Theater performance
Having figured out the structure of optical systems, van Leeuwenhoek's invention – the microscope and the structure of the camera obscura – we will together come up with a story through which we will introduce others to what we have learnt ourselves. Together with the participants, we will create a fascinating scientific and theatrical show that unites art and science, history and modernity.
